Bio
Born in New Jersey, Pauper D soon moved to Oakland, California. As a young teen, he began deejaying local house parties, small venues, and private events. By the mid-1980s he began writing original Hip-Hop lyrics and soon became fascinated by Reggae music and Jamaican culture.
His interest in Reggae music led to years of unforgettable DJ sets at many underground parties and venues throughout the 1980s. Being immersed in Jamaican culture and obscure Reggae vinyl led to unforgettable DJ sets throughout the 80s and 90s. Pauper D’s eclectic and exciting tracks eventually laid the groundwork for his own original works. Through freestyling, deejaying, singing, and writing, he honed his own personal style, finding a voice that would engage audiences for decades. He's now known as a quintessential voice of Cultural Roots Reggae and Dancehall music.
Pauper D released his first single, “Rude Boy,” which swept through the Bay Area in 1997 and could be picked up at local record shops such as Amoeba, Tower, and Rasputin Records.
Inspired by Roots Reggae music and the artists who came before him, his tracks tell stories of Jamaican culture, old-time brethren, eco-consciousness, and personal experiences.
Through the 90s Pauper D freestyled and performed with artists like Daddy Freddy, Guru from Gang Starr, and Jamalski.
He was featured in several Bay Area publications and radio shows, as well as in 4080 Hip-Hop magazine.
As his interests and knowledge of other cultures grew, Pauper D began performing on international stages. Looking first to return to the roots of Reggae, he visited Jamaica several times performing at some of the resorts on the island, as well as the world-famous Rick’s Cafe in Negril. Since then, Pauper D has performed in Copenhagen, Philippines, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and several other international cities.
He is currently headed back to the studio to record his top tracks from the past, such as “Provide” and “Una Betta Run”. He’ll also be releasing brand new material, with his own original tracks, “Reach & Go Teach” and “3 Decade".
